HANWICK, Va. - A Richmond man was found safe in a cage with a 13-month-old boy and his grandmother Tuesday evening.
Police say 26-year-old Brandon M. Williams admitted to officers that he had taken the child from a home in Hanover County earlier this month.
Investigators say after Williams and his sister were taken to Virginia State Prison in Haywood, Williams took the baby into the cage near where his sister lived.
In a 911 call made when Williams was arrested, his voice cracks and he speaks slowly, repeating, "I don't know."
But the boy he was with is no older than 12 months old.
He doesn't speak or move, but when he does, he's calm and happy, according to his grandmother, Michelle Williams.
A forensic exam is being performed on the child. Police said they found a stuffed toy under the child's diaper. A baby bed was also found in the cage, though investigators believe it was no longer there than when it was found.
When the child's parents came to visit Williams in his cell, he was quiet and had no memory of his escape.
An internal police investigation was also started.
Investigators have not released the baby's name.
A spokesperson for the federal agency that runs jails, HPD, said a person with authority to enter a custody case will have access to the child if a parent of the child has asked for that person to do so.
"When that parent requests it, that parent's personal data will be available and it will be kept by the jail," said the spokesperson, who couldn't confirm the information.
The HPD spokesperson said that after Williams entered prison he never contacted his sister and that she remains in the custody of her father.
Williams has been charged with escape, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful restraint.

"I didn't have to wait any longer. It's not going to be easy. It's not like I'm some kind of secret agent coming out and telling everyone how to harvest grain. I did my best to help people out as much as I could."
So how was it doing?
"The whole thing was crazy. I was totally unaware that everything was going to take place in a year. I was out here with friends, and we were planning on spending Thanksgiving and Christmas together. It was just like, 'Holy cow, you're taking this from scratch.'"
She told her mother what happened, and they told her what she had been doing. He came in, and he told her, "We're going to have to make adjustments now because the crops have already been harvested. I'll ask you to prepare for whatever kind of stress it is when you get home. It's your responsibility to be prepared."
He also told her, "You'll start to find the right time to see your husband."
After the two spoke by phone, her mom told her to get the kids ready and drive them home. The next day, they brought the girls home with her and returned to the field.
"At first it was super-duper dark — a foggy night," she said.
The sun came out, they ran to their car and drove up to her. They made him happy and started their day off the way they'd planned.
"I had the biggest smile on my face all of Sunday morning," she said. "I've got my wife, my kid, my parents, the kids, they've been home since 7 a.m., and we've all been talking about Thanksgiving and what to do Thanksgiving Eve and why we decided to go to the Field of Grain on the Upper Farm."
Her dad took her through the first field to harvest.
"I looked over and thought, 'Okay, this is a pretty good harvest; the grain is mostly all brown,'" she said. "I pulled my clothes out and pulled out some seeds and let it dry overnight in the car."
She picked some out of her bags and started working.
"I couldn't get them any bigger," she said. "It was just a big mound of soil. I was just trying to get them bigger to get enough to plant."
By Monday morning, they were all grown and ready to go to the fields in the summer of 2015.
"After my dad passed away in 2001, my parents decided that it was time to start our farm," she said.
She is currently raising four kids and is a homemaker now, workin
