Strauss kahn denies committing any crime in france pimping trial

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.--A black pimp who pleaded not guilty to rape and a robbery charges in a violent gang rape trial has been dismissed as a state district judge and given another hearing in April.
John H. Strauss, 33, was sentenced to seven years in prison after a one-day trial last week in Fayetteville. Strauss pleaded not guilty to a count of rape and two counts of robbery, which were part of the gang's operation in 1995. He also faced a charge of aggravated assault for beating his victims. Strauss was to be sentenced later this month.
In its order dismissing the case, the Arkansas State Supreme Court said it was "impossible to conclude that there will be an additional trial or that the state's interests will be served by a conviction."
Strauss was one of eight people accused of raping teenage prostitutes in Fayetteville from 1997 to 2001. He claimed not to have committed a crime when he consented to have sex with them.
The State Attorney General's Office, citing the fact that the sex acts were performed in a public place, said the sexual assault was committed by the pimp because Strauss wanted to "settle down" with his daughter.
"The charges are absurd, they are false and not true, and they are outrageous in the extreme," said James G. Bunch, of the law firm Selleck. "They are a joke for a trial that will be a laughingstock. John Strauss is innocent."
Bunch, a civil attorney, said he planned to file a petition in the Arkansas Supreme Court to have his client removed from state law enforcement, and to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"Strauss is a national hero, and the rape was an extremely heinous act," Bunch said. "The victim and all the victims of this incident deserve justice and they deserve to be found."
The State Attorney General's Office said it has filed no charges against Strauss and that the case was dismissed with prejudice.
The trial had drawn strong criticism of the court system from a former Fayetteville police officer who represented a victim of the attack, who spoke to the press after the judge's hearing. "We feel that (Judge) Karpes is not upholding justice," the officer, Bill Bittner, said. "It's as if (Strauss) is an out-of-town attorney and he has the entire case on him, and (Judge) Karpes is presiding ove

Last link to iconic gillies pie brand shuts its bendigo doors after 14 years
A landmark gillies brand has been sold to a Swedish online retail chain for £250,000.
The legendary brand has been part of the Gilly's history for more than 140 years.
It has been run by the family company of Peter Ostrand since the 1950s.

The website Gilly's Pie said this was the latest step in its history.
It will still be sold as an independent shop - Gilly's, with no name change - but will also continue selling gillies in the UK.
The gilly's has an online presence but will remain separate from its social media presence.
Online sales have traditionally been a vital part of a family's economic success and since Mr Ostrand was forced to sell the brand in 2013 he has kept the family name.
Aged 88, Mr Ostrand said it had been "a difficult time to think of a way forward".
The gillies company's website says it will still sell gillies
"It's such a rich and vibrant past for many who have loved and worked with Peter Ostrand to see him succeed in the business for 40-plus years," Mr Ostrand said.
"The future will lie, for now, with a great family brand going forward, and my own love of gillies."
Gillies Pie was founded in 1953 by Peter Ostrand.
Mr Ostrand's daughter Jodie told The Southbank Echo: "We have been very fortunate to be able to sell Peter and his family's name for a very low price."
The company has seen a decline in the value of its trademark after it was sold to Amazon in 2014, but Mr Ostrand said they felt comfortable doing the deal because it had a long and loyal following in the UK.
Gillies Pie will now be managed by a new owners, who are based in Sweden.
"We believe this sale will bring a new level of trust and confidence to our business," they said in a statement.
"Peter will continue to be involved in the development of this brand and his vision is for it to be 'as global as Gilly's has ever been'.
"We believe this deal with the future Gilly's will be just the first step on the path of growth and development we have all seen and expected."
The family business's website says the new owners include David and James, who had previously run The Gilly's Pies.
